Mumbai, Maharashtra May 12, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - Recently, there has been a wide circulation of claims on platforms like Whatsapp, Twitter, and Facebook regarding a homeopathic medicine that purportedly could work as a substitute for oxygen therapy for patients who are suffering from Covid-19. This claim has garnered widespread traction in India, where there's a critical shortage of medical oxygen available for critically ill Covid-19 patients.
The post (written in Hindi), claims that Aspidosperma Q 20, a homeopathic medicine, can help boost oxygen levels in critically ill Covid-19 patients. It says "If the oxygen level of a critically ill COVID-19 patient is dropping fast, do not wait for acquiring an oxygen cylinder. Instead, add a few drops of Aspidosperma Q 20 in a cup of water, and administer to the patient orally. The oxygen levels will always remain balanced following this. This is real homeopathic medicine. Do not waste time seeking oxygen cylinders. Share this fact so that you can save someone's life today".
This claim, however, has been debunked by the World Health Organization (WHO), which said that it would not recommend homeopathic medicine as an alternative to oxygen therapy. The same conclusion was arrived at by the Ministry of Ayush, and leading homeopathic organizations like Spring Homeopathy.
Rubbishing the report, the Ministry of Ayush, and Spring Homeo, took to Twitter and claimed that such posts are absolutely false and incredibly dangerous to patients suffering from Covid-19. The Ministry said that it prohibits advertisements from unverified sources that claim to treat COVID-19 infection. The Ministry warned in another tweet, that people should avoid self-medicating in critical conditions, and that a case requiring oxygen therapy is solely dependent upon the physician treating the patient.
The Ministry of Ayush further tweeted "Fake post circulating on social media claims that Homeopathy medicine Aspidosperma Q 20 can be taken as a substitute for oxygen when oxygen levels fall. #AyushFactCheck: Ministry of Ayush prohibits advertisements with claims for treatment of #Covid19 from #unverified sources."
The same has been conveyed by Dr. Bhaskar Bhatt, former president of Homeopathy Medical Association of India. Homeopathic medicines like Aspidosperma Q 20 are not a replacement for oxygen therapy. Such claims are baseless and incredibly dangerous.
Spring Homeo also strongly condemns such baseless rumours that are spreading around like facts. In critical condition, a COVID-19 patient should be taken immediately to a nearby hospital for emergency care. Further, all steps should be taken to ensure proper protection of everyone in close proximity to the infected person, which involves, but is not limited to, wearing adequate face masks and maintaining social distancing. COVID-19 is a highly infectious disease and has shown airborne transmission characteristics.
About Aspidosperma Q20
Aspidosperma Q20 is a homeopathic medicine, that is primarily used to treat diseases that affect the respiratory system. Aspidosperma Q20 has shown effectiveness in treating patients who are suffering from Asthma, Influenza, or other respiratory disorders. Aspidosperma Q20 helps relieve congestion in the chest and helps prevent frequent coughing. However, Aspidosperma Q20 is not a substitute for oxygen therapy (as the claims state), which is required by patients who are critically ill from COVID-19 infection.
Spring Homeopathy urges everyone to ensure appropriate fact-checking, especially in a time where fake news is prevalent. It also urges patients to not self-administer homeopathic medicine, and instead consult a homeopathic doctor for treatment of any disorder.
